For forty-nine years, Classical 103.5 has put music on the air the old-fashioned way: paid for entirely by the people who listen. There is no advertising, no commercial underwriting, no syndication deal. There are only listeners — and the broadcasters they keep in business.
Joining as a sustaining member is not a transaction. It is a quiet act of stewardship for an independent cultural institution that has outlived three recessions, two formats of recorded music, and every streaming wave that came after it.
New York is home to the only full-time classical music station in the country that has never sold an underwriting spot and never accepted a corporate parent. For forty-eight consecutive years, every note on 103.5 MHz has been paid for by listeners sending in monthly gifts of five dollars, fifteen dollars, fifty dollars, and more.
In 2024, 41,800 sustaining members together raised $7.2 million — ninety-four percent of what it costs to keep the transmitters warm, the hosts on the air, the studio acoustically treated, and the FLAC stream running at three-twenty kilobits for anyone in any of eighty-six countries who wants to tune in tonight.

Concerts on the air
Classical 103.5 is the exclusive radio partner for Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Metropolitan Opera. Those partnerships cost the station real money — licensing, engineering, satellite uplinks from each venue — and they are paid for, line by line, by sustaining members. A gift of fifteen dollars a month underwrites one of the 138 concerts the station puts on the air each year.

In conversation with living artists
In 2024 the station hosted 312 in-studio conversations with living composers and performers, including Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, and Gustavo Dudamel. Each one runs ninety minutes of unscripted conversation before a live microphone, edited for the weekly broadcast and archived in the on-demand library. Member support pays for the studio time, the engineering, and the on-air hosts who make those conversations worth hearing.
First in America · since 2019
The signal itself
The station was the first classical outlet in America to launch a FLAC lossless stream, in 2019. The infrastructure that keeps that stream running for listeners in eighty-six countries is not free. Transmitter power, fiber uplinks, encoding servers, redundancy — sustaining membership keeps the signal measurable, audible, and uncompromising about how it reaches you.

I joined in 1989, the year the station became Classical 103.5. I was a graduate student then. The eleven dollars a month I send now is, frankly, the easiest check I write — and it is the one I am most reluctant to stop writing.
I am a freelance violist. The station is the single biggest reason my work is heard by anyone outside the concert hall. Becoming a member felt less like charity and more like settling a tab I had been running for years.
My wife and I retired to Connecticut in 2017. We kept the membership because the FLAC stream follows us, and because we wanted the broadcast partnership with Carnegie Hall to outlive us. It will, I expect.
